Well now that I'm older I am realizing the importance of this. Living in California it is likely that we would be faced with a Drought, earthquake, or tsunami(hey it could happen!) And most of all FIRES! we live in an area where we could very easily go up in flames if someone started a fire, or lightning struck in just the right place or whatever else starts fires.
And now with how the economy is I realize that our food storage is important in case we just don't have money some months to buy food. or at least have some cash stored away at home in case we need to use it.
So here is a list of things I have put into my kits. Things that fit to my families needs. Things that I will actually use, food that i will actually eat and clothes that I will actually wear etc, ect...
I started out thinking about going on a weekend vacation or camping trip. anything I would bring with me I would want in my kit. I used a lot of things I had just lying around the house which makes this kit very inexpensive.

-backpacks (I happen to have three old backpacks lying around I don't use, so i use these as the kits)
-hygeine stuff- toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or brush, hairtie, soap, q-tips, cotton balls, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, floss, hand sanitizer, toilet paper... I made sure to put all of this in ziplock baggies cause if you've ever had anything break while you were traveling you know it can be a disaster. Also I tried to pack travel sizes to save space. most grocery stores sell travel size stuff for $1. We just saved our shampoo and conditioners from when we have gone on vacation from the hotels. they work perfectly.
-I packed my old pair of glasses I never use anymore and was going to donate, but thought that they would be perfect to put in my kit. since contacts might be harder to take care of. also an old pair of sunglasses, again I never use them anymore.
-femine hygeine products. oh how bad you would want this if it happened to be your time of the month when disaster struck!
-mini first aid kits with band aids, wraps, disinfectant ointment, alchol pads, tylenol etc...
-candles with waterproof matches
-$20 in dollar coins (paper money could get ruined in a fire or flood.)
-pocketknife
-mini sewing kit
-underwear
-change of clothes (cool weather and warm weather) I just used old tshirts I would have given to the thrift store.
-sweater
-waterproof Jacket/ poncho
-umbrella
-towel
-socks
-emergency blanket (those silver ones they use for astronauts)
-flashlights
-bateries (do not store in flashlights, they tend to go bad or corrupt)
-mini battery opperated radio
-bottled water (which I labeled by date, so I know how old it is and when to switch it out when I go through my kits in the future.)
-water purifier
-hard candy (lifesavers, jollyranchers)
-whistle
-couple of cans of food, soup, or beans, (dated)
-plastic utensils
-for Kailah I made sure to pack two reusable diapers, onsies that fit bigger(long sleeve and short sleeve), i'm still nursing so Im not too concered about food yet for Kailah. And she pretty much has everything else in her bag that we do. some babies might need a bottle, or jared baby food.
-a picture of each family member and all personal information to be able to show to people in case we are looking for a family member cause they are lost.
-pair of flip flops
-
I'm making sure to pack a car emergency kit for both cars, and a mini kit for Jason to store at his desk while he is at work, just in case he is working while a disaster happens.
I hope this gives everyone some more ideas for their own kits, obviously you can add to and take away from my list to make kits that fit your family best.
If you think I have missed some important things feel free to comment to add to this list. I probally haven't thought about everything... If i do think of more stuff I will add it to this list later!
I hope there never comes a time when I will have to use any of this. but just in case I am so glad I have FINALLY gotten things together. And if there ever was a natural disaster the one person I would want to be with, besides Jason and Kailah of coarse is my step Mother Angie! she is Queen to being prepared and she knows SOOO much. I know we would be safe if we were with her. the problem living in California is if there was a huge disaster how do we get to her in Utah...hmmm..... Again hopefully no natural disasters affect us! :)
